John Brigden was born in Brisbane in 1949. His interest in art began at a very early age and by Secondary School was being tutored by Rex Backhaus-Smith, who once stated that John ‘’….has shown that he has exceptional ability in art…’’. Brigden took advice from art dealer and philanthropist, Mr. Philip Bacon (of Philip Bacon Galleries) in 1969 and went to study fine art at Eastaus Art School where he eventually became a tutor. Post art school studies were at North Point Institute, Brisbane College of Photography, Mitzi Finey Lecturer Seven Hills College of Art and with two Archibald Prize winners Guy Warren and Clifton Pugh.
