Brisbane Powerhouse is both a producer of contemporary performing arts and a multi-arts venue.
Nestled on the beautiful banks of Brisbane River (beside New Farm Park) the former power station has become a distinct landmark, both as a stunning industrial creation and as a hub for everything creative, including theatre, music, comedy, film, visual arts, festivals and ideas.
HERE. THIS. NOW.
We belong to a place and a time. We have open doors and open arms, and we embrace the creativity of our city.
We offer connections with other arts lovers, with artists and with the world. Step inside our doors and you’ll experience art that you can’t see anywhere else in Brisbane.
We create unique events and experiences that can’t be repeated. Our 1,000+ events a year, ranging from theatre, music, comedy, dance, film, visual arts, festivals and ideas, offer a chance to experience something different — any day of the week.
We are a centre of contemporary culture and we embrace this fact. We are Brisbane and we are now.
We celebrate contradiction. We tell the story of a city that didn’t tear down a power station in order to build a theatre, but instead built a theatre inside a power station.
Brisbane Powerhouse is in the heart of New Farm and Teneriffe’s historical industrial zone, which originally featured a sugar refinery, gasworks, wharves and wool stores.
The building was once a working power station which electrified the city from the 1920s to the 1970s. Left abandoned, the city’s artists, rebels and fringe-dwellers used the building as a performance space, home and underground hang-out. It’s only natural for us to represent the bold, the indie, the popular, the awkward, the artistic, the repressed, the hard-working and the relaxed – they’ve been here the whole time.
We house the epic and the small in a range of venues including:
Powerhouse Theatre (400-800 seats)
Visy Theatre (110 – 220 seats)
Turbine Platform (110 to 1000 standing)
Rooftop Terrace (50-150 seated/standing)
Graffiti Room (25-40 seated/standing)
Riverbend Terrace (45-70 seated/standing)
Park Mezzanine (25-40 seated/standing)
Brisbane Powerhouse Plaza (1320m2 of paved outdoor space)
Performance Lawn (750m2 of freshly mown grass)
Brisbane Powerhouse is home to an incredible team under the artistic direction of Kris Stewart.
If we’re not solving a problem, making life easier, keeping patrons safe, passionately advocating for brilliance or going the extra mile, we’re probably at the bar, about to head in to a show.
We’re family and we’re proud of Brisbane Powerhouse and all that is created here.
Brisbane Powerhouse has connections. New Farm Park surrounds us with green, and the river is our backyard. We are surrounded by family homes and studios instead of high-rises and our energy reflects that.
We have artists-in-residence creating fantastic new works. Brisbane Powerhouse is a place where things are built. We’re not merely a frame, we make the art within.
We’re dedicated to contemporary culture and engaging experiences. We promise to push the boundaries, do the hard work and keep working towards the next chapter of this building’s incredibly story.
We’re certain that a visit to Brisbane Powerhouse will leave you feeling inspired.
