WHEN : 11th - 13th August
WHERE : Brisbane Powerhouse
The Australian Virtual Reality Film Festival (AVRFF) is the first event of its kind in Australia, dedicated to emerging virtual reality technology. Having partnered with Screen Queensland and Brisbane Powerhouse, the inaugural event will showcase the best of Virtual Reality film from August 11 – 13.
A selection of short films, music videos and documentaries that integrate the use of virtual reality technology have been chosen by an curatorial panel to showcase the work of the next generation of filmmakers. AVRFF is a platform for innovative filmmakers to present their art form in a space that promotes creative development and industry discussion.
A New frontier is emerging in film, both internationally and locally. A new wave of virtual reality filmmakers are propelling the industry into the next era. Virtual Reality film is a new medium that offers audiences an immersive viewing experience. Filmmakers that engage with virtual reality technology discard the real life limitations of traditional filmmaking practice, instead testing conventions of scale, colour, movement and an audiences ‘reality’. As Virtual Reality technology is still in an early adoption phase, this festival aims to introduce the public to the creative potential with a program of national and international films, across narrative, educational, and music video genres.
Rather than follow the existing public performance format of traditional film screenings, AVRFF works will be viewable via individual head mounted displays, giving each audience member the opportunity to explore the full immersive experience of Virtual Reality technology, and allowing the public to view the works in their own time.
