Intersection Australia: a large-scale video collage of New York street life

WHEN : 16th – 18th Nov
WHERE : Brisbane Institute of Art, 41 Grafton St, Windsor

On tour for the first time outside New York, Project Intersection will hit the big screen in Brisbane in November. A video collage of New York street life, Intersection aims to overwhelm the physical distinctions of place, culture and time.

Brisbane trained architect and video artist Rachel Barnard, a founding member of the New York project, is in Brisbane to present this free public art event. Rachel Barnard said the project explores psychogeography and the ways people from disparate communities occupy and interact within public space, in particular sidewalks.

Intersection Australia plays on the boundaries between geographical and cultural territories. When collapsed by the video collage we create a virtual urban space that is both familiar and strange”, she said. The video has been featured in a numerous New York based events including Nuit Blanche Festival, Conflux Art and Technology Festival and the Columbia University Arts Initiative.

The exhibition will be installed via a 30-metre projection onto the façade of the Brisbane Institute of Art building from 16-18 November. The projection will be visible from the areas surrounding the Brisbane Institute of Art and guests can participate from neighbouring Windsor Park.

An artist discussion will be hosted in the Brisbane Institute of Art building on the closing day. The discussion will be chaired by emerging Brisbane curator Tess Maunder with contribution from Project Director Rachel Barnard and Yen Trinh. The panel will focus on video art in public space.

Intersection Australia is presented in partnership with Brisbane Institute of Art and Brisbane City Council.
