The work in this exhibition presents an ongoing search for both symbolic and pragmatic remedies to the effects of overconsumption and focusses on all the pretty things that consumer culture offers and the not so pretty side of it all. A close study of mass-produced decorative items led to the desire to sustainably create more meaningful objects through the use of the home-grown and the handmade. These investigations revealed that objects have a life or narrative beyond their apparent practical use. This, in turn, led to a consideration of a more holistic view that recognises the rich and complex cultural diversity within society.
