The 2 Danks Street Award for Contemporary Art Criticism has been established by the permanent galleries of 2 Danks Street Waterloo in conjunction with Artist Profile magazine and online art journal Art for All: All for Art, to foster new writing on, and extend discussion about, the visual arts. This award is initially being given for writing about exhibitions at galleries in the 2 Danks Street complex. In subsequent years, the intention is to extend the award to exhibitions in other Sydney based commercial or private contemporary art galleries.
The task: The prize is open to new writers with an interest or expertise in the visual arts, to write a review of between 1,000 and 1,500 words about an exhibition from one of the permanent 2 Danks Street Galleries during June, July or August 2013. A selection of eligible exhibitions at Brenda May Gallery include the following:
- Janet Parker-Smith: Little Wonders (until July 6)
- Amanda Stuart: Lines of Desire (until July 6)
- Mighty Small – Co-curated by Olivia Welch (July 9-27)
- Arun Sharma: (de)composition: lovers (July 9-27)
- Al Munro: Patterns from an invisible world (July 30-Aug 17)
- Todd Fuller: There’s no place like Rome (From Aug 20)
After being shortlisted by the Danks Street Gallery Directors, an independent panel including Candice Bruce, Owen Craven, Pru Gibson and John McDonald will select the winner. The winning entry will receive a cash prize of $1,000 and be published in Artist Profile and Art for All: All for Art.
