Firstdraft is a national artist-led organisation that creates a professional context for the exploration of ideas and incubates the emerging. We believe that in order to sustain a cultural ecology, we must provide a dynamic and energetic infrastructure that positions artists firmly at its centre. The Firstdraft Board of Directors is made up of a diverse range of artists, writers, curators and arts administrators, whose skills and knowledge are key to realising the success of its vision.
Firstdraft has recently experienced an exciting period of development that has seen the evolution of its facilities and programs at its new site in Woolloomooloo. We are looking for individuals to join the board who have a strong knowledge and understanding of emerging arts practice, and the passion and creativity to develop, support and promote emerging artists locally, nationally and internationally.
The Firstdraft Board consists of eight volunteer Directors serving a two-year tenure. Each year, Firstdraft seeks and selects four people to join the Directorate. As a Firstdraft Director, you will become an ambassador for one of Australia’s longest-running ARIs and a key stakeholder within the emerging arts community. We are looking for leaders who possess the drive to take Firstdraft forward, who represent its interests and vision, and who can articulate and facilitate its future.
Some examples of the duties that you will undertake as a Firstdraft Director are:
– Assist in programming, producing and implementing Firstdraft’s Annual Programs
– Strategically position Firstdraft within the national arts landscape
– Manage and maintain relationships with artists, organisations, funders and other key stakeholders
– Seek and pursue grant opportunities
– Administration and finances
– Manage and maintain Firstdraft facilities
– Manage the Firstdraft Volunteer Program
– Oversee exhibition installation and deinstallation
– Assist and supervise exhibition opening events
– Facilitate Firstdraft Public Programs (e.g. artists’ talks, critical forums, live events)
– Supervise and support Firstdraft Studio Residents
– Manage and coordinate Firstdraft’s annual fundraising

– Manage and coordinate Firstdraft’s annual print edition
– Seek, develop and participate in additional opportunities that compliment Firstdraft’s Annual Programs (e.g. art fairs,
symposiums, panel events etc.)
– Oversee marketing and publicity obligations for Firstdraft and its programs
– Develop and maintain Firstdraft’s media and communications strategy (e.g. website, social media, newsletter etc.)
Selection Criteria
Ideal candidates will possess a degree in a Visual Arts related field or have relevant industry experience; have excellent communication and interpersonal skills; a sound knowledge of contemporary and emerging art practice; knowledge and/or experience of artist-run initiatives and/or not-for-profit organisations; experience with the handling and installation of artwork; be capable of working both autonomously and within a collaborative environment; and be able to work flexibly, consistently and outside of conventional working hours. A typical weekly commitment involves 10-20 hours.
