Reminiscence: A Tribute to Judith Wright

Deadline:

Judith Wright Centre

Reminiscence pays tribute to Judith Wright and her life. On reflection Judith was a fiercely intelligent, strong and passionate woman who cared deeply about the land of her birth and the first people of her beloved country, Australia.

Artist, Fiona Rafferty and Ceramicist, Frances Smith have worked collaboratively to produce a body of work that celebrates and pays homage to Judith Wright.

The decision to create a body of work in commemoration of Judith Wright, arose for Fiona in 2013 when she was fortunate to reside in ‘Calanthe’, the former home of Judith Wright and Jack McKinney, on Tamborine Mountain. Fiona spent five months gaining an insight into Judith as a person, a writer, a poet, a conservationist and an advocate for human rights. Fiona felt a great synergy with her beliefs and obvious passion and respect for the natural world and she used ‘Calanthe’ as a vehicle to connect with Judith in a visual sense. Both artists have spent time on Tamborine Mountain and have had the opportunity to share ideas, concepts and a great respect for Judith Wright and her legacy.

The exhibition will be comprised of 2D and 3D work. Fiona will be producing a series of works on paper and a series of paintings, and Frances will be creating a series of ceramics in Southern Ice porcelain and ceramic totems that pay tribute to stages in the life of Judith Wright.
