Seven emerging curators and seven Queensland artists have come together to present ‘Uncanny’, an exhibition that explores the strange in the everyday.
The artworks on show disrupt familiar scenes to re-examine expectations and perceptions. “Visitors to the exhibition can expect to see a variety of Queensland artists’ work including sculpture, video and photography,” said Curators in Space spokesperson Leanne McIntyre, “together the works in ‘Uncanny’ suggest that things are not always as they seem, but are often strangely familiar.”
‘Uncanny’ is the culmination of a curator development course delivered by Flying Arts Alliance to provide emerging curators with skills and hands-on experience curating visual art exhibitions. According to Flying Arts CEO Stephen Clark, “The course is an incubator for curatorial talent and is the first of its kind in Queensland. Uncanny is a unique collaboration between a group of curators, many of who haven’t worked on an exhibition before.”
The Curators in Space are: Vanessa Bertagnole, Helen Dennis, Leanne McIntyre, Siobhan Nunan, Kate O’Connor, Michelle Richards and Charlotte Tegan.
The exhibiting artists are: Rachael Bartram, Kate Bernauer, Gerwyn Davies, Dan Elborne, Pirrin Francis, Jason Haggerty and Sarah Oxenham.
