The Arts play an important role in defining us, both as individuals and as a collective. More than any other art form, sound has the capacity to define generations, transport us somewhere else or elicit an emotional response. Its potency is palpable. Yet galleries are far too often… quiet. So, the chance to curate an exhibition combining a national collection of audio recordings with our regional art collection was one we have taken up with pleasure and anticipation.

The Art of Sound is a new collaborative project between the National Film and Sound Archive (NFSA) and selected regional art galleries, which examines the intersections between sound and the visual arts. It was inspired by the NFSA’s mandate to share its audiovisual collection with the people of Australia through touring projects, film festivals, screenings and exhibitions. We hope that visitors to the gallery will enjoy the multisensorial experience and consider what the sounds and chosen artworks mean to them, and perhaps even what alternative artworks or sounds they might have chosen instead!

The Art of Sound is supported by the National Collecting Institutions Touring and Outreach Program, an Australian Government program aiming to improve access to the national collections for all Australians.
