Deadline:

Deadline:9th June, 6:00 - 8:00pm

In this workshop, experienced arts accountant Brian Tucker will help you understand your tax basics as an artist, what paperwork you should keep and how to organise it before you visit the accountant. He will also help you recognise what expenses you can claim and how to claim them, why you need an ABN and why you may not need to be GST registered. You’ll learn about what sort of business structures might be appropriate (or inappropriate) for your practice and how income averaging works. You’ll discover what ‘tests’ the ATO use to work out if you are really “in business” as an artist and you’ll hear about how to defend your position against the possible assertion that “this is surely just an expensive hobby”. You’ll walk out of this workshop aware of the perils of section 35-10 of Division 35 of the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997 and prepared for tax time!

What you’ll get:

  • The opportunity to ask Brian any questions about tax and the arts
  • Coffee, tea, juice, and snacks!

What to bring:

  • Note pad and pen
