Martin Smith: and that’s what tortures me

Deadline:

Jan Murphy Gallery

Nationally recognised artist Martin Smith will present his solo exhibition, and that’s what tortures me, at Jan Murphy Gallery in July. Having recently joined the gallery’s stable, this exhibition of new works will showcase the artist’s unique text based photographic works and sculptures.

Based in Brisbane, Smith’s practice is informed by the artist’s personal narratives and is often imbued with humour and pathos. Using both text and photography as methods of recording experience, he creates works that resonate with meaning and speak to the human condition.

and that’s what tortures me explores the idea of personal torture. The actions and events we do to ourselves and each other that create anxiety and difficulties. Smith states:

“ The mood of the show will be more humorous than tortured. I am interested more in the obstacles and intrusions that we place before us, that in the long run, cause harm”

Smith has been exhibiting nationally and internationally for over a decade. His work is held in significant public and private collections in Australia, Hong Kong and the USA, including QAGOMA, Monash Gallery of Art, MONA and Artbank.
