Mitchell Fine Art

Mitchell Fine Art will host a solo exhibition of the artwork of artist George Gittoes. Represented in some of Australia’s most prestigious collections this will be Gittoes first commercial exhibition in Brisbane.

For nearly 4 decades Gittoes has documented the best and worst of some of the world’s most notorious human conflicts in Somalia, Rwanda, Bosnia, Nicaragua, South Africa and Afghanistan. His artworks capture the atrocities and attacks on basic human rights and have typically reflected his social, political and humanitarian observations of man’s treatment of his fellow man. His artworks are both confronting and thought provoking.

The body of work in this exhibition has been created over the past 30 years and concentrates on imagery relating to a series of unpublished novels and essays written by Gittoes.

On Saturday July 30th George Gittoes will hold an artist talk from 11am at Mitchell Fine Art. Following this at the Queensland Art Gallery of Modern Art there will be the launch of George’s new book ‘Night Vision’ and the screening of his latest film ‘Snow Monkey’ from 1.30pm. Gittoes will also be at the screening of his movie and available for book signing.

Acclaimed as one of Australia’s most important artists, in 2015 he was awarded the Sydney Peace Prize in recognition of his life’s work in contributing to the peace making process. His work has been collected by major galleries and institutions.

‘Night Vision’ opens 6pm Friday 29th July with George Gittoes in attendance.
