Art of the Skins

Deadline:

State Library QLD

In a trail that weaves from SLQ Gallery to kuril dhagun, explore historical and contemporary artefacts, accounts and images; hear oral histories from Elders, artists and academics; and be immersed in a vivid installation of contemporary representations of Country.

Paying homage to those who’ve come before us, Art of the Skins embodies the continuous, ever-growing and adapting nature of Australia’s first cultures.

Visit SLQ Gallery (level 2) to be inspired by how knowledge is gained and passed on through six richly decorated cloaks, collaboratively designed by Aboriginal community members from Brisbane, Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast.

Art of the Skins in kuril dhagun (level 1) showcases a multidisciplinary display of work inspired by the revitalisation of Aboriginal possum skin cloak making traditions. Explore the artistic practice and research of lead exhibition artists Carol McGregor and Glennys Briggs, and learn about their shared connection to place.

Learn more about cultural revitalisation through a panel discussion on Tuesday 23 August, and celebrate the Art of the Skins project with community at the closing celebration on Friday 18 November.

Visit slq.qld.gov.au/belonging to learn more about SLQ’s 2016 program of events exploring the sense of belonging in Queensland and the connections we have to our families, communities, special places, and other people in Queensland.
