Jason Fitzgerald: Shaky Ground

Deadline:

Jan Murphy Gallery

Queensland sculptor Jason Fitzgerald’s latest series of ceramic and timber works will comprise a new solo exhibition, Shaky Ground, at Jan Murphy Gallery.

Until recently, Fitzgerald was solely known for geometrically formed timber sculptures made of salvaged timber shards and off-cuts, but of late he has been working in the ancient medium of clay. Shaky Ground contains both timber and ceramic works. Speaking about the series, Fitzgerald states:

“The aesthetic of the broken has always been an inspiration, where the weathered surface has inspired my previous work; my new work draws on the more destructive force of an earthquake. The works capture a moment in time, where tectonic plates collide under the earth’s surface, reshaping the landscape, cracking sidewalks and toppling building facades.’

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Fitzgerald completed his BA at QCA at Griffith University in 2011 and has exhibited regularly since 2006. In 2010, he won several awards for excellence in studio practice and has been a finalist for a number of awards since, including The Churchie National Emerging Art Prize, Deakin University Contemporary Small Sculpture Award, The Alice Prize and the Gold Coast Art Prize. His work is held in Australia’s Artbank collection and a number of private collections.
