Tristan Eyles: Civil Landscapes

Deadline:

Greaser Art Gallery

This single night exhibition presents Civil Landscapes, a new body of work by Tristan Eyles. Eyles’ interdisciplinary practice opens up contemporary relationships between the personal, the urban, and the natural landscape, with a focus on uncovering alternative experiential encounters.

This exhibition runs in tandem with the Civil Landscapes exhibition presented by S0S0. Explore Civil Landscapes at S0S0.org from July 18 – August 8 for more.

Included on the night will also be a live mix by Strangler Fig.

Utilizing photogrammetry software Tristan Eyles’ Civil Landscapes recreates distinct aspects of suburban civil landscapes, commenting on the divergent relationship between the physical landscape of Australia and it’s perception and mediation through digital technologies.

Australia is both a continent and nation, where 80% of its population is distributed over three cities in the south east corner of the country, (The Geopolitics of Australia, Wikileaks). For many people, their everyday exposure to manicured green spaces, nature strips and artificial waterways influences their perspective on and experience of nature and natural spaces.

Physical interventions in a city’s civil landscapes can as such uncover the extent to which simulacra is evident within the suburban and built environment. Eyles proposes that frequent exposure to such a mediated experience has the potential to form a divergent appreciation for the natural world.
