The UQ Art Museum presents ‘Women IN … Indigenous Women in the Arts’. Presented in conjunction with our current exhibitions ‘Shirley Macnamara: Layered threads’ and ‘Judy Watson: concealed histories’.

Join women artists, writers, performers and curators in a conversation about Country, well-being and cultural heritage.

Born in northwest Queensland, Shirley Macnamara was raised in Camooweal in far-western Queensland and on pastoral properties throughout the Barkly Tableland. Her current exhibition ‘Shirley Macnamara: Layered threads’ is at the UQ Art Museum until 24 November.

Judy Watson was born in Mundubbera, Queensland. Watson’s Aboriginal matrilineal family are from Waanyi country in north-west Queensland. Her current exhibition ‘Judy Watson: concealed histories’ is at the UQ Art Museum until 24 November.

Melissa Lucashenko is an acclaimed Australian writer of Goorie and European heritage. Her recent work has appeared in ‘The Moth: Fifty True Stories’, ‘Meanjin’, ‘Griffith Review’, and ‘The Saturday Paper’.

Freja Carmichael is a Ngugi woman belonging to the Quandamooka People of Moreton Bay. Carmichael is a curator of ‘The Commute’ exhibition, showing at the Institute of Modern Art, Brisbane until 22 December.

Alethea Beetson is a Kabi Kabi and Wiradjuri artist and producer who has worked extensively with Indigenous communities across multiple art forms to inspire new works responding to societal issues, cultural heritage and colonisation. Alethea is the Artistic Director of Digi Youth Arts.
