Jan Manton Art is pleased to announce upcoming exhibition Encounters by Brisbane based artist Kate Mckay.
McKay’s painting practice brings out the monumental in the small details of everyday spaces. Encounters showcases the intense focus McKay brings to her work, and her ability to make the familiar, urbane sights of Brisbane feel strange and uncanny.
Working with the edge of daylight, McKay cleverly uses light to elevate the mundane into objects that demand our attention. Her still lifes have an uneasy tension that makes you think you’d be unwilling to turn your back to them.
She captures the quiet drama of the enigmatic and fleeting moments at the edge of our periphery, as day gives way to night on the streets of suburbia. Eileen Abood, 2018
