Curator’s Talk, Susan Best
March 21, 2019 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm
In conjunction with an exhibition of work by Cuban American artist Ana Mendieta at the IMA, guest curator Professor Susan Best presents a talk titled ‘Ana Mendieta’s Emotional Ties’. Best’s talk will centre on the ‘Silueta’ series—considered Mendieta’s most important work—and consider the artist’s ideas about an emotional connection to the earth.
Ana Mendieta: ‘Connecting to the Earth’ brings together two series of works by the artist (1948-1985) that are about connection to land. Rarely considered together, the ‘Silueta’ series and the ‘Rupestrian Sculpture’ series powerfully demonstrate Mendieta’s idea of feminised nature.
‘Connecting to the Earth’ is the first solo exhibition of the artist’s work in Australia and is guest curated by Professor Susan Best, Deputy Director (Research & Postgraduate), Queensland College of Art, Griffith University. Find out more about the exhibition here: http://bit.ly/2SbTdat
