Please join Timothy Kendall Edser, in conversation with Brooke Ferguson, José Da Silva and Kieran Swann for an informal in-depth discussion at Metro Arts’ Gallery. Explore the exhibition and hear more about Timothy’s practice and the process of developing ‘Tension 17’.

Tension 17 is an ambitious performance based installation work by Melbourne based artist Timothy Kendall Edser. Using the gallery space as a site to physically explore ideas around the formation of masculine identity, Edser tests the limits of his body and leaves us to contemplate the remnants and traces of these explorations. Tension 17 is the latest in a series of on-going works which began in Brisbane in 2001. Past Tension works have seen the artists’ body tightly compressed in a sculptural press, dragged through substances representing his body weight, held in Hellenistic poses by thermoplastics and running and falling through solid walls and floors.

Timothy Kendall Edser completed his Bachelor Fine Arts (Visual Arts) with Honours at the Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane in 2002, and works across performance, installation, sculpture and new media. Edser’s evolving Tension series often challenge the physicality of his body in relation to exhibition spaces in which he is working.

Tension has been exhibited at West Space (Melbourne), Blindside (Melbourne), Margaret Lawrence Gallery (Melbourne), MOP Projects (Sydney), IMA (Brisbane), Galerie Petronas (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia), CareOf Gallery (Milan, Italy) and more recently Zero Gallery (Berlin, Germany) at the completion of a one year residency in Germany.
