Join the launch of Gordon Bennett: Selected Writings with an online event, presented by Power Publications.

Gordon Bennett: Selected Writings is the first publication to survey the writing practice of the late Gordon Bennett (1955–2014), profiling the importance of the written word within Bennett’s art and broader intellectual practice, and providing vital insight into one of Australia’s most important contemporary artists. Shifting between scholarly debate, political argument and personal reflections, Bennett’s writings constitute a key component of his life-long interrogation of the power of art, words and images.

Gordon Bennett: Selected Writings brings together nearly forty published and unpublished essays, artist’s statements, letters, and interviews from across Bennett’s three-decade career. To launch the volume, four speakers will select texts from Bennett’s archive to read and respond to his words in the context of their own practice.

  • Kelly Gellatly will consider the artist’s shifting attempts to control his public identity
  • Dr Stephen Gilchrist speaks of being reintroduced to Bennett through is writing practice
  • Judy Watson finds parallels between her practice and Bennett’s; and
  • Tim Riley Walsh reflects on his project to find Bennett’s voice through the archive

Edited by Angela Goddard and Tim Riley Walsh, and co-published by Power Publications, Sydney, and Griffith University Art Museum, Brisbane, the publication’s release coincides with the forthcoming retrospective of Bennett’s oeuvre ‘Unfinished Business: The Art of Gordon Bennett’ at QAGOMA, opening 7 November 2020.
