Deadline: 3 June

Photographers of all levels are invited to submit a black and white digital photograph inspired by Brisbane’s built environment. Museum of Brisbane will select a number of submissions to display in our upcoming exhibition, New Light: Photography Now + Then (opening August 2024).

New Light draws on the Elliott Collection, one of the most significant photographic collections housed by Museum of Brisbane. Spanning a 50-year period from 1890 to 1940, the collection was acquired in 1983 after being found stored in cedar cigar boxes under a house in Red Hill. It comprises hundreds of photographs taken by Brisbane amateur photographer, Alfred Henrie Elliott.

In New Light, seven contemporary Brisbane photographers will dive into this treasure trove of an archive and debut exciting new commissions created in response. By layering their own perspectives, knowledge and experiences onto the collection, the artists will encourage new ways of looking at our past, our present and this place.

Alongside these new commissions, New Light will feature a dynamic display that highlights the talents of Brisbane’s broader photographic community.
