“Does Your Wife Make Honey?” marks Mia Gunton’s first solo exhibition of the year, opening on Saturday 2 May at 5pm. A recent graduate of QCAD (2024), Gunton is a Gold Coast–based artist whose practice explores the construction of sexuality, desire, and betrayal through visual culture.
Drawing on cinematic language, still life, and self-portraiture, Gunton appropriates and re-stages film stills, inserting herself into scenes to challenge and disrupt the passive gaze. Her work employs symbolic motifs—particularly florals and food—to interrogate how visual systems shape cultural understandings of pleasure, power, and intimacy.
Through these layered compositions, Gunton invites viewers to reconsider familiar visual narratives, exposing the tension between image, identity, and control.
