‘Unbound’ presents a dynamic body of large-scale abstract oil paintings by Sunshine Coast–based artist Odessa Mahony-de Vries. Working through a process-driven approach, her compositions unfold intuitively—guided by gesture, movement, and the physicality of paint rather than a fixed outcome.
Beginning with an initial mark or wash of colour, each work evolves through responsiveness, where layers build, shift, and dissolve. Surfaces retain the history of their making, revealing traces of earlier decisions and moments of transformation.
Mahony-de Vries describes the work as an exploration of embodied mark making, releasing energy into the canvas and relinquishing control to allow the material to lead. The result is a series of works that document thought in motion—inviting viewers to engage not only with the final image but with the evolving process behind it.
