The Golden Light presents a body of work by Johnny K, whose practice is deeply rooted in a lifelong connection to the Australian landscape. Drawing inspiration from early experiences of vast horizons and shifting light, his paintings reflect both memory and direct observation.
With formal training at the National Art School and further study at the Julian Ashton Art School, Johnny K has developed a strong command of colour, composition, and materiality. His work balances traditional landscape painting influences with a contemporary sensitivity to surface and atmosphere.
Much of his process begins outdoors, painting en plein air across rural New South Wales. These initial studies are later reworked in the studio, allowing time for reflection and refinement. Through thick brush marks and layered paint, his works aim to capture not just the visual qualities of the land, but its physical presence—inviting viewers to feel the terrain and experience the artist’s journey through it.
