Time & Tide is a series of abstract paintings by Mary-Paula Ibrahim shaped by impermanence—not as loss, but as transformation.
The works explore how memory rewrites place, carrying remnants of what has passed while energy continually reshapes what appears fixed. Situated in the threshold between erosion and emergence, permanence and change, the paintings draw on encounters with urban spaces, coastlines, estuaries and industrial waterfronts.
Rather than describing landscape directly, Ibrahim’s paintings evoke atmosphere, shifting between what is seen and what is felt. Surfaces become records of their own making, holding traces like sediment—marks that gather, dissolve and reappear.
Colour functions as atmosphere rather than depiction: blue as distance, rust as residue, and pale fields as air, silence and pause. Through these cyclical forces, the works suggest landscape not as a location, but as an emotional map where time becomes depth and tide becomes rhythm.
