Open, Enclose is a solo exhibition by Brisbane-based artist Shayle Flesser, presenting a substantial new body of work spanning large-scale painting, collage, hand-built ceramic vessels and sculptural objects.
The exhibition brings painting and object into conversation, with the works developed alongside one another. Paintings and ceramic forms share colour, gesture and material sensibility, while the unpredictability of the kiln informs the development of new paintings. Large canvases with deep, earthy grounds and expressive mark-making are presented alongside hand-built vessels in terracotta, cream and muted mineral tones.
The exhibition represents a return to Flesser’s own artistic practice following years immersed in art, interiors and the creative work of others through A1 Frames and Emma Street Studio. The resulting works explore intensity and stillness, expressive gesture and restraint, with the paintings, vessels and sculptural forms conceived in relationship to one another and the spaces they occupy.
Flesser is a Brisbane-based artist working across painting, collage and ceramics, with work held in public and private collections in Australia and internationally. She undertook a residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris and is the founder and Creative Director of Emma Street Studio.
