SITUATE Art in Festivals provides an exciting opportunity for early career artists and creative practitioners to push boundaries, take creative risks and develop concepts for artworks that respond to the unique potential of festival sites and audiences, via an open call to participate in an intensive interdisciplinary residency. The program is based at Salamanca Arts Centre in Hobart and other locations across Tasmania.
The SITUATE Arts Lab is an immersive intensive two-week program of provocation and mentoring designed to stimulate ideas and extend artists’ knowledge. You’ll be involved in artist to artist ideas exchange, invited to work collaboratively, and contribute your ideas and experience as you develop your proposals for making temporary artworks for public space environments.
During the Arts Lab artists will have the opportunity to work with creative practitioners experienced in developing large-scale, site-specific or public-participatory artworks. Acting as provocateurs, senior practitioners will come from a wide variety of backgrounds, offering a range of creative and technical skills, to guide participants through a process of creative development, offering feedback on ideas as they emerge.
Artists will be encouraged to think in new ways about the presentation of art for large-scale public events and to tackle the logistics involved in scaling up for complex and ambitious projects in an outdoor setting.
The 2016 Arts Lab will be held alongside MONA FOMA and include a briefing session with some of our festival partners and an opportunity for participants to present their practice in a public forum.
Accommodation, flights, per diems and an honorarium will be provided for artists accepted into the Arts Lab program.
Early career artists and creative practitioners who can demonstrate the potential to engage with festival audiences and work site-specifically AND artists prepared to take risks and embrace challenges, will be selected by a national Curatorium. Up to fifteen artists from across Australia will be invited to participate.
The opportunity is open to creative practitioners working experimentally in the visual arts, design, architecture, fashion, digital media, installation, community arts, live art, performance and other creative pursuits.
