Gary Winfield: Colour & Consciousness

Deadline:

Redsea Gallery

Gary Winfield’s work focuses on the current thinking on consciousness – what it is and where it is. His unique artwork endeavours to visualise the abstract notions of consciousness through splashes of vivid colours that organically fall and spider onto the canvas.

Not trying to interpret science, Winfield’s artwork instead illustrates the sheer and ungraspable complexity of the ghost in the machine.

He uses the uncertainty of mixing paint to reference the mathematics at the core of quantum physics. “Physicists cannot predict the behaviour of a particle but can predict the probability of particle behaviour. In my work I am seeking a level of complexity that befits this consciousness. I achieve this complexity with motion and movement through, across and into different depth spaces. The organic coloured shapes both create the space and are created by it.”

Lee Steer, Managing Director, REDSEA Gallery, “The vibrancy of colour and form within Gary’s work is unlike anything I’ve seen before, it’s literally awe inspiring. The response we’ve had to his work so far has also been incredible too. It’s really interesting to hear what individuals see within Gary work, it’s almost like a Rorschach test, some people say they see big hibiscus-like flowers, or Siamese fish, or even the spindling neurons of a synapse. I think this is the great thing about Gary’s complex work, it can be all of these interpretations and none of them- all at once.”
