Catherine or Kate are visual artists from Brisbane, Australia, who have been working collaboratively since 2008. Having just recently returned from a residency at Skaftell Centre of Art in Iceland, they are extremely excited about facilitating a project that brings some of the work they encountered during this time to Australia.
A ship called she looks at notions of sea-faring, travel and humour. Central to the exhibition is the work of Ásgeir Emilsson (1931-1999), long-term resident of Seyðisfjörður.
The youngest of twelve siblings Geiri worked as a fisherman and in his spare time made works from aluminium cans and cigarette packaging. This exhibition will be the first showing of Ásgeir’s work outside of his home town Seyðisfjörður.
Artists exhibiting alongside Geiri’s work are:
aiPotu (Norway) is a collaboration between the artists Anders Kjellesvik (b.1980) and Andreas Siqueland (b.1973). Anders & Andreas met at the Royal Academy in Copenhagen in 2004 and have since been working together making travel related projects. Aipotu were last in Australia for the 2008 Sydney Biennale.
Paul Harrison (b.1966) and John Wood (b.1969) (UK) have been working collaboratively since 1993 producing single screen and installation based video works. The work investigates the relationship between the human figure and architecture, developed through short form video (20 seconds – 3 minutes) with particular emphasis on actions being formulated and resolved within a given duration. They have exhibited widely, have work in numerous public and private collections (including MOMA, NY: Tate, London: Centre Pompidou, Paris), and are represented by galleries in London, Lisbon, Basel, Paris and Naples.
Joseph Breikers (b.1983) (Australia) is a Brisbane based artist and founding co-director of Boxcopy Contemporary Art Space. Breikers work for this exhibition has been derived from his time spent in Skagaströnd, Iceland (the home of Hallbjorn Hjartarson, The Icelandic Cowboy). During his time in Skagaströnd Breikers explored the image of the slouching cowboy or outlaw.
Catherine Sagin (b.1986) and Kate Woodcroft (b.1987) (Australia) have been working collaboratively since 2008. Catherine or Kate are the curators of this exhibition and will also be developing a performance work that responds to the aformentioned artists work in the exhibition.
Catherine or Kate are currently in discussion with the Queensland Maritime Museum in the hopes of securing a selection of local sea-faring artifacts to accompany the exhibition.
