Ali Bezer: Noisewall

4th - 24th June

The Walls

Ali Bezer is a visual artist and researcher based on the Gold Coast whose PhD (2016, Griffith University) investigating the visual and psychological effects of hearing unfamiliar sounds, including computer generated cosmic noises and Musique Concrete. Her art practice expresses these abstract recorded noises through sculpture and installation pieces in which she materialises sonic timbres, tonalities and structures into visual textures and forms. Through her work, Ali aims to elicit feelings of uneasiness and curiosity in viewers, which she experiences while listening to unfamiliar sounds, and which are normal psychological responses to unknown stimuli for humans and other animals.

Ali is currently working in The Walls’ studio space on small scale sculptural objects as the Autumn Artist in Residence, testing concepts and materials for her upcoming NOISEWALL exhibition (June 4 – June 24). Ali’s NOISEWALL exhibition centres on visual representations of acousmatic sounds. Often associated with the work of French music philosopher, Michel Chion, the concept of ‘acousmatic’ sounds refers to those noises that can be experienced without the perceiver being able to see the source of sound production in real time.

Ali Bezer’s work responds to acousmatic sounds that are significantly abstracted from recognisable sources of origin through sound recording and editing procedures. Sounds that have been cropped, slowed down, repeated, joined and layered result in hybrid noises, estranged from their original source. In the studio Ali applies similar sound editing techniques to art making processes, by transforming existing sound objects such as vinyl records and cassette tape into assemblages of new and strange sculptural forms. She is experiments with the use of mineral and organic materials to develop large-scale installations which interpret the timbres of different white noises in larger-than-human scales. Ali’s exhibition will open on 4 June.

Ali’s residency and exhibition are a joint project by THE WALLS and national sound art organisation Liquid Architecture.
