Queensland College of Art, Griffith University with the goal to create a process which will help certain elements of my pakana culture to continue and prosper, as well to expand my artistic skills and mediums by which I can convey stories from my personal and spiritual past and from my land and culture. It has long been the tradition of pakana culture for the women to impart lore and cultural knowledge to the young when out gathering the necessary shells to be prepared for stringing. As our world succumbs to the realities of climate change, resource scarcity and the cultural homogenisation of globalisation, this element of pakana culture will be lost. After enduring the attempted physical and cultural genocide of colonising Europeans, we continue to face the issue of cultural loss and subjugation.
In my contemporary jewellery practice, I am looking at ways to preserve this element of pakana culture. I will create a process which will emulate the traditional gathering process by utilising current and future technologies. Hope After Dissolution is a snapshot of this journey I am on.” – Andrew Gall
