Artist Talk : Nancy Stilianos

Deadline:

WHEN : 23rd October, 6:00pm
WHERE : Metro Arts

Join Nancy Stilianos in conversation with Susan Ostling, Senior Lecturer Visual Arts, Queensland College of Art, as they discuss Nancy’s practice and the time intensive process behind the sculptural forms in Anthotopia.

Plus visit the Gallery during Friday Night: November (1st Nov) to see Nancy pulling cotton for new work. Viewers will be invited to join her and share the experience.

Drawing its name from the Greek word “anthos,” to mean blossom, bloom or flower, Anthotopia is an immersive place of wonder and imagination, inviting you to pause in a place of fun and pleasure.

Using raw cotton dyed with vegetable juices and food colouring, Nancy Stilianos has created a site of beauty. Preferring the hand made over the mass manufactured, these gentle sculptures are the result of the time intensive process of pulling cotton.

The works are made from locally grown and sourced materials, presenting an alternative to mass consumption and raising questions about how we can create beauty with the existing natural resources that surround us. For Stilianos, being able to make or grow things for ourselves ultimately represents self-determination.

While being a place of beauty, the works in Anthotopia also act as expressions of the less manufactured and more sustainable.
