Khaled Sabsabi & Michael Dagostino to Represent Australia at the 2026 Venice Biennale

Creative Australia has announced award-winning multidisciplinary artist Khaled Sabsabi and esteemed curator Michael Dagostino as the artistic team set to represent Australia at the 61st International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia in 2026. Their exhibition at the Australia Pavilion will foster empathy and connection, offering a powerful exploration of human collectiveness, identity, and ideology.

About Khaled Sabsabi & Michael Dagostino

For over 35 years, Khaled Sabsabi has worked across mediums, borders, and communities—creating immersive experiences that encourage deep reflection. His practice examines the complexities of identity politics and ideology, inviting audiences to engage in collective conversations.

Michael Dagostino, a highly regarded curator and arts leader, has been pivotal in fostering artist-driven projects. He was the founding director of Parramatta Artists’ Studios, later led Campbelltown Arts Centre, and is currently Director of the Chau Chak Wing Museum at the University of Sydney. Throughout his career, Dagostino has championed access, equity, and diverse voices in contemporary art.

A Collaboration Rooted in Shared Experience

Speaking on their collaboration, Khaled Sabsabi stated:

“We acknowledge and recognise First Nations cultural and linguistic diversity that has existed on these lands for thousands of years.

Our collaboration is informed by our common lived experiences and work histories, as migrants and children of migrants. We trust in the culturally diverse voices of Western Sydney and Australia more broadly and the lessons they may offer in negotiations of global futures.”

Sabsabi now joins a prestigious group of 42 Australian artists who have represented the nation at Venice, engaging global audiences through their bold creative contributions.

The 2026 selection followed a rigorous two-stage open call, with six outstanding artistic teams shortlisted:

  • Hayley Millar Baker with Erin Vink
  • James Nguyen with Anna Davis
  • Jenna Mayilema Lee with Tina Baum
