Beyond the Bauhaus?

Deadline:

QUT Creative Industries

2019 will be the centenary of the Bauhaus. In 1919 the Bauhaus sought to overcome the divisions between art and technology, art and applied design and sought create a new paradigm overcoming both social and cultural divisions. The ambition made it famous, but it failed in its goals collapsing in 1933 as a result of Nazi pressure. 100 years later we are taking this opportunity to discuss what remains of the Bauhaus vision, observing that the QUT Creative Industries Mapping Document of 1998 similarly sought to overcome the division between art and applied design. In light of this background, it is timely to reconsider the relationship between art and technology, experimental versus applied creative practice.

This panel will discuss the legacies of the Bauhaus’ ambitions, the role of art education today and whether such tensions between art and application are perennial. What does the legacy of the Bauhaus offer towards the ambition of contemporary art education?

This event is held in association with the Brisbane Consortium for the Visual Arts (BCVA).
