The inimitable Las Vegas based artist Matthew Couper opened his exhibition ‘BLACK SQUARE, BLACK CROSS, BLACK FLAG’ last week at Brisbane’s SmallWorks gallery in Kangaroo point. He recently stated that ‘like any good Johnny Cash, Nick Cave or Pixies song, you’ve got to have sex, death and religion fuelling the fire’. Working in a Spanish colonial tradition, Couper fuses his anachronistic appropriations with the birth of the Suprematist Abstraction in this, his second solo show at SmallWorks. Comprised of several oil paintings on metal and cast aluminium Nsiki.
SmallWorks gallery has been operating in Kangaroo Point, Brisbane since November 2011 and has hosted a number of revolving exhibitions of mid to high level artists.
