Celeste Chandler was born in Hobart in 1977. In 1998 Chandler graduated from the University of Tasmania, Tasmanian School of Painting, with a Bachelor in Fine Art (majoring in painting). In 2003 she obtained her Masters in Fine Art from the same institution.
Chandler’s work has been curated in a number of group exhibitions including Work by 1999 Residents, Cite Internationale des Arts, Paris (1999), The Portia Geach Memorial Award, S.H. Ervin Gallery, Sydney (2001), Synergy, CSIRO Marine Building, Hobart (2002), and Scratching the Surface, Canberra Contemporary Art Space, (and touring 2003/04).
In 2005 her work was seen in the exhibition Letitia Street Studios December 1998 – December 2004, a survey exhibition of younger Tasmanian artists who worked in the Letitia Street Studios in Hobart curated by the Plimsoll Gallery, Hobart. In 2005 she held her first solo exhibition with Heiser Gallery, and the following year showed with Michael Reid at Elizabeth Bay, Sydney.
In 1998 the artist was awarded the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Scholarship, Quebec, Canada, and the following year received a residency at the McCulloch Studio, Cite Internationale des Arts, Paris for six months. In 2003 Chandler received a Marten Bequest Travelling Scholarship travelling throughout the Continent and the United Kingdom.
In 2004 she was again awarded the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Scholarship, Quebec, Canada and in that same year was Artist in Residence at the School of Art, Australian National University, Canberra teaching and working in the studio. In 2007 Chandler received the People’s Choice Award in the Metro 5 Art Award, Melbourne.
