Flying Arts Alliance is thrilled to announce, Fibres and Vessels, a captivating solo exhibition by emerging Indigenous artist Clare Jacque Vasquez which will run from 3 to 17 June at Judith Wright Centre.

Vazquez grew up in both an urban environment in her younger years, and then on her Grandmother’s Country in north-west New South Wales near the mission and station where her family lived. Vasquez’s work showcases unique memories and moments from being raised with three generations of Gomeroi/Kamilaroi women under one roof navigating the aftereffects of change.

The 2024 Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Awards finalist said, “Each artwork in Fibres and Vessels is a tribute to the stories and weaving practices passed down through my family. It delves into the intricate connections between us and our ancestral lands.”

Vazquez employs natural brushes, fingertips, branches, and self-made tools to layer acrylic paint and impasto, resulting in canvases that are tactile and visually compelling.

Her methodology can take up to 12 weeks to complete and this slow process of layering showcases her gentle, resilient nature, carefully turning a two-dimensional canvas into a sculptural painting.

Her works appear etched, embedded, and scarred with the narratives of her ancestors, providing a profound commentary on memory, identity, and connection to the land.
