CROSS–STITCH: Invasion, Take 225 is a re-write of history, a re-imagination of culture, and a re-definition of identity. On arrival, audiences will be handed a fresh passport for this New Australia, and will join in a campaign, a celebration, and an all-round art party, through unconventional spaces in Metro Arts.
Lisa is scrutinising the notion of what makes an Australian. Her Pacific Islander heritage does not make her any less Australian, and she is claiming it. Dissatisfied with the dominant media image of the Australian identity, Lisa and her collaborators are campaigning for a New Australia, 225 years after.
“Cross-Stitch is a great opportunity for this diverse mix of artists – who all call Australia home and whose backgrounds herald from all over the world – to really share their experiences of our country, and come together with an audience to do the same.” explains Fa’alafi.
“There’s a range of performances, projection art, dance and music. This team is using all of their artforms to broadcast from a new frequency to drown out the standard mediatised depiction of ‘an Australian’.”
