Acclaimed New York-based artist, Denise Green AM, explores collage, painting and photography in her practice. Born in Melbourne, Green studied in Paris at L’École des Beaux-Arts and La Sorbonne before moving to New York to study under artists Mark Rothko and Robert Motherwell. Her most recent retrospective exhibition was held at the University of Queensland Art Museum in 2016-17. Over the last two decades, nine museum retrospective exhibitions of her work have toured internationally to institutions which include PS1/MoMA New York, Art Gallery of New South Wales (Sydney), and Museum Kurhaus Kleve (Germany).
Since 2013, Green has incorporated photography into her art practice, which she often combines with abstract drawings. ‘Marking Memory’ continues Green’s exploration of photography’s ‘memorial capacity,’ in response to an album containing photographs from her father’s Second World War service. Recently discovered by the artist, the album documented his experience as a medical corps driver in the North African campaign, the experience of which he never disclosed. Upon returning to Australia, Green’s father suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder, which coloured the atmosphere of her family life and childhood. As such, Green reflects, “Discovering these photos explained my father to me. Creating photo collages from these images, I processed some of the experiences that he never did.”
