Mitchell Fine Art launches its 2018 exhibition calendar with the annual group exhibition ‘Director’s Choice’.
Curated from the gallery collection, Director Mike Mitchell has carefully selected artworks from various artists, showcasing some of the galleries finest works.
Comprised primarily of artworks by represented artists, the exhibition includes new paintings from two artists recently added to the gallery’s stable – Amanda Penrose Hart and Stewart MacFarlane.
Penrose Hart is a landscape painter working primarily en plein air. As a landscape painter, travelling informs most of Penrose Hart’s paintings. Whether en plein air or recalling the memory of a certain place, Penrose Hart captures these experiences through her application of thick impasto paint as much as the imagery portrayed.
MacFarlane’s work is saturated with contrasting blocks of colour, cinematic lighting and exaggerated angles. His paintings are dramatic narratives – uncertain and unsettling. With his implied scenarios and visual clues, MacFarlane’s works raise more questions than answers as he entices the audience to play detective and solve the mystery. Capturing seemingly random moments MacFarlane engages a universal visual language to create suspicious atmospheres.
Artists featured in this year’s edition of ‘Director’s Choice’ include: Amanda Penrose Hart, Carlos Barrios, David Hayes, Jeff Makin, Stewart MacFarlane, Steve Lopes, Euan Macleod, Kudditji Kame Kngwarreye, Lorna Fencer Napurrulaand Peter Hudson.
