The exhibition title references the popular children’s game known as ‘Telephone’, in which a message is created and whispered one child to the next around a circle. The ‘aim’ of the game is for this message to circumnavigate the group intact. However, errors inevitably accumulate as the message is misheard, misunderstood and misrepresented (sometimes intentionally), so that the final whispered message often bears little relation to its original.
It is in this dissemblance that the game and this exhibition’s playful interest lies, as Aaron Perkins, Emmalyn Hawthorne and Timothy Fairless indulge their shared enthusiasm for, and scepticism of language.
