New Strength is a reflection on Emily’s first year of motherhood and experience of matrescence. Personal symbols, patterns, and recurring motifs interact with each other while introspective figures close their eyes and inhabit their inner world. The works consider the ambivalent nature of life transitions and how monumental life events can change our sense of identity, our perspective, thoughts, and relationships.

Emily McDuff is an emerging artist and illustrator based in Meanjin/Brisbane, Australia. She creates introspective mixed-media work that is driven by process, intuition, and emotion. She uses symbolism, the human figure, pattern, and text to explore the relationship between the inner and outer worlds. Emily studied art history and graphic design and currently works as an early childhood art educator, where she is endlessly inspired by children’s creativity.
