An ephemeral 400sqm mural by local artists @MCRT.Studio has emerged in South Brisbane, adding a vibrant touch to the urban landscape. The artwork, visible from both 14 Edmondstone St and the bustling Melbourne St, was commissioned by Aria Property Group to showcase the artists’ skillset and enrich the community’s cultural fabric with a splash of colour and inspiration.
Brisbane-based artist duo Maxim Chikanchi and Rozelle Tan, who met at the University of the Arts London, have been collaborating on visual art for the past decade. Their impressive portfolio includes artworks exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery, Canberra; The Outdoor Gallery in Edison Lane; Brisbane Street Art Festival; and the Brisbane Powerhouse as part of the Brisbane Portrait Prize. Known for their figurative style and narrative-driven collage elements, their work reflects their experiences and observations of the world around them.
Their latest piece, titled Memories of Her, is a nostalgic exploration inspired by Tan’s personal experience caring for her grandfather after the loss of his wife. The mural depicts an older gentleman as he engages in thought as described in the following artwork statement:
Upon a quiet moment, a flower sighted in passing triggers a plethora of his memories of her. The urgency to meet on a sunny day, she whisks through the field on her bike. The days of adolescence, discovering who they are, dancing in the moonlight when it gets too much. It stings to see her favourite flower, but it’s the love and the memories that keep her alive.
The mural is on display for a limited time, inviting the public to experience this evocative work of art before it departs.
