IMA Talks, Podcasting: Listening and Being Heard
October 5, 2019 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm
In conjunction with Lawrence Abu Hamdan’s exhibition ‘Earwitness Theatre’, Liquid Architecture and the IMA present a talk by Melbourne-based radiomaker, musician, and writer Jon Tjhia.
Tjhia makes podcasts that experiment with narrative form, collaboration, and political subjectivity. He will discuss and play excerpts from ‘The Messenger’—an award-winning podcast produced by Behind the Wire and the Wheeler Centre—built from thousands of WhatsApp voice messages sent between journalist Michael Green in Australia, and Abdul Aziz Muhamat, a human rights defender and refugee on Manus Island.
He will also discuss ‘how are you today’, a collaborative project commissioned for the Liquid Architecture exhibition ‘Eavesdropping’, which produced a fourteen-hour archive of audio recordings made by six men held in Australian offshore detention in Papua New Guinea.
Don’t miss this opportunity to hear Tjhia speak about the process of collaboratively bringing together politically engaged podcasts and advocacy as a media producer.
