The Art of Transport

About the Speakers:

Danya Sherman is a USA-based cultural planning and community development consultant. A serial entrepreneur in the public and non-profit sectors, Sherman runs a community development and arts consultancy based in Boston, Massachusetts. She is also a Senior Consultant on the Research Strategies team of ArtPlace America, a ten-year funder collaborative that aims to integrate arts and culture in community planning and development. Danya Sherman was a core team member on the executive leadership team at Friends of the High Line, the non-profit entity that manages the High Line park in New York City. Over her seven years at the High Line, Sherman founded and directed the Department of Public Programs & Community Engagement, and built a team and suite of cultural and educational programs focused on making the park an equitable public space. Sherman later co-founded the MIT Case Study Initiative, an innovative multimedia pedagogical platform that immerses students into real word scenarios addressing pressing social issues. Sherman’s writing has been published in Next City, Shelterforce, Take Shape, and by Rutgers University Press. Sherman has addressed audiences publicly at the New School, the Boston Society of Architects, Project Row Houses, Drexel University, and more. She holds a Master’s in City Planning from MIT and a Bachelor of Arts from Wesleyan University.

Carlo Prato is Professor in Transport Engineering at The University of Queensland. It is his natural curiosity and passion for behavioural modelling that drives his research into understanding what makes people behave the way they do as pedestrians, cyclists, public transport users, car drivers and freight operators. His research endeavours are quite diverse but all focus on real-world problems in search for sustainable solutions to the movement of people and goods, producing impact from not only an academic but also a societal perspective. His research endeavours are quite diverse also in his collaborations that count psychologists, social scientists, mathematicians, economists, and doctors alongside engineers.

Ross de la Motte is an award-winning architect, landscape architect and urban designer, and a specialist in urban transport and place making at HASSELL. His completed major works include Olympic Park Station, Homebush Bay Rail Link, Cross City Tunnel, Parramatta Station, Epping to Chatswood Rail Link, Perth Metro Rail, the South West Rail Link and the recently commissioned Sydney Metro North West – Australia’s biggest public transport project. Ross aspires to create beautiful, sustainable places which enrich cities and enhance the prosperity, health and enjoyment of the community. He calls on research, history and art in motivating his team to unlock the most potential of these projects for our clients.
