Un/bound – paper vessels workshop with Jenna Lee
March 8, 2020 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Join artist Jenna Lee in this hands-on workshop and create your own paper folded vessels to add to a collaborative installation inspired by ‘un/bound passage’, a significant large-scale installation work featured in the exhibition Rite of Passage. Beginning with an artist talk, Lee will then guide you through the process of making different folded boats and vessels, while exploring text and the transformative ritual of understanding, deconstruction and reconstruction.
All materials provided. If you wish, you are welcome to bring your own recycled paper evoking a memory, such as saved gift wrapping, sheets of music or pages from a book.
This workshop is family friendly.

JENNA LEE
Jenna Lee is a Larrakia, Wardaman and Karajarri woman who is also of Asian descent. Her contemporary art practice explores the acts of identity/identification, label/labelling and the relationships formed between language, label and object. Being a Queer, Mixed Race, Asian, Aboriginal Woman, Lee is strongly influenced by her overlapping identities, childhood memories as well as maternal teachings of subject and process.
As an interdisciplinary artist, her work incorporates painting, printmaking, found object and sculpture with a reoccurring use of paper, the book, language and text. Recent work explores the transformation of the printed word through the ritualistic acts of destruction and reconstruction, seeking to translate the page into a new tangible language.
With mixed ancestry running alongside many events in history directly leading to the presence and resilience of both Asian and Aboriginal people in Australia, Lee’s current area of artistic research revolves around ancestral cultural objects as well as interdisciplinary cross-cultural practices which aim to rewrite the telling of Asian and Aboriginal narratives in Australia.
Registration is essential.
