WHEN : Wednesday 29 June, 6pm – 8pm, Exhibition 29 June to 16 July 2011
WHERE : GALLERY 1 | METRO ARTS GALLERIES
For his first solo exhibition at Metro Arts Galleries, digital video artist Daniel McKewen will plunder the flood of imagery generated around celebrity figures to create new works which survey idealised masculine and feminine beauty in Western popular culture. Exploring the intersection between the roles of the artist and the fan, Daniel’s work appropriates and reconfigures elements of pop culture imagery to investigate how such interactions allow us to ‘make sense’ of our own social experience. Portraits will incorporate large-scale video projections, screens as sculptural objects and experimentations with time-based video synchronization, with works serving as both portrait of the constructed nature of screen-based imagery, as well as portrait of the pop culture audience that consumes such constructions. Currently working towards a PhD at the Queensland University of Technology, Daniel has previously exhibited with the Institute of Modern Art, Brisbane Festival 2009 (Total Nowhere Emotion Expansion), Beijing’s Songzhuang Art Museum and Melbourne’s 2010 Next Wave Festival and is a founding member and co-director of artist-run initiative Boxcopy, a former Metro Arts’ ARI In Residence.
