‘Looking Out, Looking In: Exploring the Self-Portrait’

Contemporary society has become increasingly attuned to the self-image through social media’s ‘selfie’ culture and reality TV, providing a fascinating backdrop in which to examine the self-portrait today.

‘Looking Out, Looking In’ explores the genre of the self-portrait, a distinct form of portraiture in which subject and artist are one. The exhibition examines the human tendency to envisage oneself. While some of the artists look inwards and reflect on themselves in self-effacing ways, or may just be intrigued by their own image, others seek to project an image or identity in more flamboyant displays.

It does not just reflect a literal reworking of the artist’s archive through a process of remaking, overlaying and inserting people and place. But it also echoes a few words used when an acknowledgement of country occurs, often taken out of context but having a much deeper meaning. Past, present, future; explores the notion of time and space; and the fact time is non-linear but circular. The work explores how we can simultaneously exist in the past, present and future through connection to our ancestors, our land and ways of knowing, being and doing.

This exhibition features older, reworked, and new works that all relate to the artist’s connection to country and her identity.

Sancintya Mohini Simpson: Sugar

Sancintya Mohini Simpson is an artist and researcher based in Brisbane, Australia. She is a descendent of indentured labourers sent to work, from India to South Africa, on colonial sugar plantations.

Her work navigates the complexities of migration, memory and trauma through addressing gaps and silences within the colonial archive. Simpson’s work moves between painting, video, poetry and performance to develop narratives and rituals. Her practice is grounded in collaboration and community engagement, connecting wider narratives surrounding descendants of indenture and their diaspora communities.

Chimera presents the drawings and paintings of Meanjin (Brisbane) based artist Ella Senbruns. Titled after the mythological goddess and monstrous amalgam, Chimera pushes representations of the body into the realm of the sensuous and unrecognisable. Executed within graphite, oils and mixed-media mark making, Senbruns’ figures are grotesque and alluring assemblages of flesh, objects, and plant matter. With them rove audiences, through the incoherent fringes of alien borderlands.

The exhibition presents video, photography and drawings made on the islands in the Strait of Hormuz. Situated off the southern coast of Iran, on these islands there is a common belief that the winds can possess a person, bringing illness and disease. Similar convictions are held in some African countries suggesting these ideas may have been brought to Iran from southeast Africa through the Arab slave trade. This history is the starting point for Hoda Afshar’s body of work.

Vanghoua Anthony reinterprets and reinvents Hmong traditions and aesthetics within an Australian context. Weaving together everyday objects and recycled materials, Vanghoua Anthony’s work speaks to his do-it-yourself attitude, instilled in him by his family and the broader Hmong community, whose experiences of migration have required them to ‘ua li ua tau’ or ‘make do’ with what is at hand.

Paula Dunlop is a Brisbane-based artist, designer, and maker. She takes traditional bead-weaving techniques to produce contemporary and sculptural pieces from her home studio in Paddington. Her work has been exhibited both locally and overseas, and is stocked in gallery and museum stores throughout Australia and in the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum in NYC.

Shop silver, gold and glass wearables, meticulously handwoven with needle and thread. Paula’s distinctive application of time-honoured (and time-consuming) hand-weaving and wire working produces contemporary minimal pieces that are beautiful both on and off the body. Visitors can see, try and buy new additions to current collections (as well as some old favourites in new colour-ways); purchase special one-offs, limited edition pieces, and recent works on paper.

~ What is it to confess? A secret, hidden beneath the public face, is surrendered to view.

In this collection, Scott Breton turns to experiences connected to shame and pain, to the eternal struggle between despair and the vital lust for life. The results are dreamscapes. Or perhaps nightmares, with some containing confronting surreal imagery. Non-verbal, felt senses of the human condition, terrifying and beautiful, become a seductive black ocean, a spreading patch of blood, and the caress of golden light. Breton has made pictures of a mental jumble of conflicting forces shaping our world, from Palaeolithic cave painting, to today’s mental health crisis, to contemplations of artificial intelligence, to the practises of Sufi mystics.

In a formal sense, the life drawings included in this show are connected to the paintings by an investigation of the calligraphic, painterly mark, which has the capacity to make tangible the secret, kinetic themes that can be felt in the figure, and in the mark-making hand.

Emily McDuff is an emerging artist and illustrator based in Meanjin/Brisbane, Australia. She creates introspective mixed-media work that is driven by process, intuition, and emotion. She uses symbolism, the human figure, pattern, and text to explore the relationship between the inner and outer worlds. Emily studied art history and graphic design and currently works as an early childhood art educator, where she is endlessly inspired by children’s creativity.

This exhibition examines how language poses the ability to cause division and have the power to unite.

In his recent artworks, Sha Sarwari has opted to incorporate the opulent aesthetic beauty and fluidity of Farsi script, particularly the Nataliq script, with the richness of Hazaragi vernacular. Sarwari aims to make visible Australia’s cultural diversity and question the dominance of English language in linguistically diverse country such as Australia.

In the 1970s, Australian Aboriginal people from the desert began talking to the world through art, transferring their creation stories of the land and people to canvas. Now in the 2020s, this foundational echo is going back and forth. No longer a one-sided, outward calling, it reverberates multi-dimensionally within wider Australian and global communities.

Following on from two sellout solo exhibitions, Brisbane artist David Hayes tells his story – a chronological depiction of life events at a point in time during the Covid-19 pandemic. Through his paintings, Hayes examines the relationship between the global and the personal; strength and vulnerability and how they are linked. ‘The story is mine, but as always, seeks to find common ground by some invisible thread, with the viewer’, says Hayes.

An exhibition opening will be held on Friday 11th November, from 6 – 8pm with the artist in attendance.

David Hayes will also present an Artist Talk on Saturday 12th November from 2pm. This is a wonderful opportunity for art lovers to learn more about his practice as he discusses his inspiration and techniques.

‘Susie Choi: Island of Misfit Buoys’

Susie Choi is a Sydney-based contemporary artist who works across ceramics, sculpture and installation and is guided by ideas that confound and amuse her.

The sources of inspiration for her work stem mainly from childhood including toys and playgrounds, the material culture of South Korea, and elements of Australian popular culture.

Each body of work unfolds in a series of stages: mould-making, slip-casting, glazing and multiple firings. These processes provide opportunities for continual experimentation and refinement, and elements are kept modular in order to allow for ongoing building, rearranging and play.

The resulting forms and artworks in their soft palette of pastel colours evoke a sense of nostalgia and invite audiences to reconnect with their own childhood memories and experiences.

Susie Choi graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Art in Ceramics in 2021 from National Art School, Australia. She has exhibited in several group exhibitions in Sydney. Her work is held in public and private collections across Australia.

Oriental Futures is a photographic series exploring the oriental setting that is apparent in sci fi cinema, particularly that of Blade Runner (1982) and Blade Runner 2049 (2017). This series aims to reconcile the use of ‘Asia’ as decoration within predominantly white storylines by highlighting its appearance and making it central to the images. By placing herself in the images the artist assumes these futuristic Asian stereotypes to question her own identity in relation to how asian culture is perceived in Western cinema.

Zoe Wong’s practice explores her half Chinese, half Australian heritage as well as her queer identity through photographic appropriation and mixed media installations. Her work illustrates the complexities behind the influence that pop culture has on society’s notions of race and identity and how we perceive ourselves through representation in mass media. Wong describes her practice as a “De-Orientalising” practice in which she works to break down and critique notions of the East presented in a Western context.

Three related Aboriginal painters Charmaine Pwerle (daughter), Barbara Weir (mother) & Minnie Pwerle (grandmother) are exhibited in Motherline. Though FireWorks has consistently shown the work of Barbara Wier & Minnie Pwerle, the gallery is excited to present Charmaine for the first time. This new body of paintings by Barbara & Charmaine has been recently created in their Alice Springs studio. These are accompanied by selected works of Minnie Pwerle’s, painted two decades earlier. The resonance in the stylistic influences is still apparent, even decades later.

Empathetic Ethnography is the culminating exhibition outcome of this research project. The exhibition title, Empathetic Ethnography, draws upon the key multispecies ethnographic research approach undertaken in this project, whilst also foregrounding the artwork’s intentions to celebrate a sense of empathetic kinship with other-than-humans. Comprising beeswax sculpture, video projection, soundscapes and installation, this exhibition showcases four final artworks which highlight these artist-honeybee collaborations.

Seinileva Huakau is a ceramicist and a weaver of Tongan descent, who grew up in Western Sydney and is based in regional Queensland. Her practice is driven by strong connections with traditional materials, stories and customs. Huakau started to work with textiles through WeAve Parramatta, an intercultural group that connects diverse individuals through textile art. For this exhibition she has used scraps of Jewellery, costumes and plastics to weave garments and necklaces that represent different generations making in a shared space.

Originally an abstractionist, over the course of time Tupicoff’s practice has broadened to examine the natural world in a more overt way, producing striking oil paintings and fine pastel drawings.

Karee Dahl’s creative practice is primarily concern with the processes and material relationships between textiles, drawing, painting, sculpture, and installation practice. Dahl refers to her practice as, “an obsessive manipulation of thread – a continuous drawn line of fibre.” Her works range in a variety of sizes, colours, pattern, working both aspects of two and three dimensionality, maintaining a fragility in surface quality, yet a resilience in structure, that favours a direct viewing visual experience to appreciate the material and the performative process, qualities that evade photographic documentation.

‘Line, Point, Pleine’ is a response to the 24 hour viewing space in Machinery St. The work will intervene and interrupt the quiet of this sealed window space on a busy street. An accumulation of lines of gold thread that reach and spill onto the floor, as time goes on piling, slipping, re-mingling and further spreading out across the space, mimicking the experience of window shopping with its ever changing reflections on daily life and the social lines of thinking that shape and reshape the human condition – a lived reflection, looking out and in.

This work is a continuation on a series – ‘Sketching Space in Gold, made for a space in Bastakiya Dubai, UAE in 2013
