Night & Day is a solo exhibition of new works by Cairns-based Umpila artist Fiona Omeenyo, presenting refined figurative paintings alongside sculptural works developed during workshops in Brisbane in 2025 and 2026.
Known for her graphic confidence and minimal colour palettes, Omeenyo’s paintings depict family, ancestral spirits, and memories of country and culture in Lockhart River. Works such as Floating and watching evoke the omnipresence of ancestors, while paintings including Night cruise together and Night at the sea recall time spent on the water hunting, fishing, and gathering near the mangroves.
The exhibition also marks an expansion of Omeenyo’s practice into three-dimensional forms, with bronze sculptures and a wall-mounted LED light work. In Days and Nights on the Water, ancestral spirits are translated into luminous colour, juxtaposing ancient culture with contemporary materials and technology. Together, the works speak to survival, continuity, and the passing on of cultural stories to future generations.
